You would not expect a billion-dollar company to design itsproduct in a fashion to where it prevents you from getting thevery thing that you want most out of a computer. SPEED! Afterall that's what computers are all about improving the speedingof our lives. They are supposed to be an instantaneousinformation tool but Microsoft is preventing this from happening.

Here is how they do that. If you ever tried to optimize WindowsXP you notice that is quite difficult to do. It is difficulteven find the areas which you can optimize and they're very fewbooks that explain how to optimize and set the little tweaksthat actually make Windows work better. Now why is that?

There's also the problem that Windows does not put informationon your hard drive and a very organized fashion. I admit theyinclude a defrag tool in Windows XP and in many of the earlierWindows of versions but it's quite useless to use. Which puts usin a situation where information is being saved to your harddrive in a very disorganized fashion and we have no way toreorganize it.

Here is another point. Now why isn't there a spyware an adwareprotection built right in the Windows XP. This problem beenaround for a while. There should've been a patch made a longtime ago to prevent and stop spyware & adware from getting inWindows XP. It is a fact that many of the antivirus companiesare already figuring spyware and adware protections into theirsoftware.

Why wouldn't Windows XP beat them to the punch?

Firefox and Netscape are both attempting to safeguard theirbrowsers which brings up the other reason that you can't get anyspeed with Windows XP. Windows Internet Explorer is wide open. Idon't find very many ways to protect Internet Explorer built in.You have to buy or find secondary software that protects it foryou.

Another Windows XP software that is quite vulnerable is Outlookexpress it's very easy to get into with and viruses whichactually destroys computer speed.

Finally Windows XP manages memory very poorly. This makes yourcomputer become sluggish and slow. Why not put out a shortinformation bulletin that explains how to refresh the memory inWindows XP before it boots up. According to a programmer that Iwork with this would be the best way to do it. The only drawback is that it would take a programmer to do this. Maybe thisis why Microsoft doesn't do it.

And on top of managing memory poorly Windows XP does notstabilize your memory usage it just keeps eating memory untilyour computer crashes or freezes up. Why not build stabilizationright in to Windows XP?

The main enemy of your computer is heat. Heat will destroy acomputer given a high enough temperature or a long enoughduration. When you machine is nice and new, heat shouldn't be aproblem is a well designed system. Well, if it isn't a problemwhen you bought it, why is it a problem now? The answer are twosimple words: dust bunnies

Those pesky dust bunnies will multiply in the sanctity of yourcomputer case like real rabbts in the wild. The dust will buildup on the components and cooling fins trapping in heat. Now Iknow that now self respecting computer stud wants to ask thewife to borrow the dust buster, heaven knows you might gettrapped into cleaning something else while you are at it. Do The Defrag

When do you defragment your drive? This is an age old questionthat I will put to rest right here and now. Backup

Enough said. If you are not backing up your data on a regularbasis, then paint your face, put on a funny wig and a rubbernose and hang out with Bozo, cause a fool you are. Read thissentance carefully: your hardrive will die someday...period. Itis only a matter of when. how often should you back up? Thatdepends again, how far back to you want to go when your harddrive dies and all of your data is gone? Every business shouldbe backing up their data monday through friday, preferably withthe ability to go back to any day's backup for at least twoweeks.

Whose got the power?

One of the most overlooked problems that will reduce a perfectlygood computer to a pile of rubble in no time flat is the qualityof the power coming into the system. If the power fluctuates upand down even a small amount, it puts a tremendous strain on thepower supply to filter it and deliver clean power to the systemcomponents. At minimum you want a good surge suppressor. I amnot talking about the $2.99 hardware store specials, I amtalking about a good quality, brand name (like Belkin) surgesuppresor. If you spend less than $20 on it, it is not providingadequate protection. If you really want ensure good qualitypower to your system, invest in even a small battery backupsystem. A small UPS will smooth out the power spikes and dropsend deliver smooth, consistent power to your system.

So let's talk about the 3 basic fundamentals of computer speed those 3 basic fundamentals are connection hardware and software. These areas are all there really is to the slowing down of computer speed or more importantly the speeding up of your computer. Your computer speed stops and slows down when you have a bad connection or when you have slow or old or bad hardware orwhen you have software that is some how not optimized properly or that in not running properly or that just takesup too much of your computer memory reserves. So those arethe 3 areas that are the fundamentals of computer speed.

They are where your speed comes from and they are where your speed falls apart. Looking at fundamentals and knowing these fundamentals make it easier for you to understand and just how to improve computer speed. This brings out one of the missing links and opens up one of the biggest problems when it comes to computer speed and that is most of the people addressing computer speed are only looking at one of these areas.

When I looked for the fundamental of computer speed using a research technique called the stable datum I found that there is really nothing else in a computer that you can repair other than hardware, software, or connection to the internet. So, those are the areas you want to start to look at when you want to improve computer speed.

This method makes it very easy to know what to do. Obviously the first thing to start with is hardware and unlike the others you really cannot tweek hardware that much. It can be done to some degree but really the way you would improve hardware is to get a more up-to-date or more efficient or faster piece of hardware. Sometime just a newer way of create a simple hardware tool will greatly improve you computer speed experience.

You can do things like get a better keyboard or a better mouse a bigger hardrive a more advanced mother board anything more improved so to speak. And as we all know things get improved at the speed of light on the internet. So thats pretty much all you can do with hardware.

Next thing we want to talk about here is software and software is a whole different thing because software is the brain of the computer. Software is what makes the computer do things. It is vital to have hardware but nothing very exciting happens until you fire up the software. We may as well start with the basic piece of software and that is Windows XP and all of the software pieces that go along with Windows XP. These are the items that you will need to be tweeking and this includes XP itself, Internet Explorer, & Microsoft Outlook. This also includes the way Windows XP load onto your computer during the start up process. Those are the first areas you will have to optimize to get any speed.

Now one of the things that make this seem more complex than it is there is always a dozen ways to do one simple thing on XP. Programmers do things one way hackers do it another way and a researcher like me I just try to find the safest and easiest way to the same end result. Just knowing the fastest way find or do a task on your computer can speed up your computing experience in a way you probably never thought of.

What you will find is that many of the default or out of the box ways that Windows XP does tasks can be changed in order to give you more speed and performance. Windows standard setting are often set very broad and general. When focused just a little you get tons more speed.

Now you can either do these adjustments yourself or you can buy software that makes the setting adjustments for you. I recommend you do both because some adjustments are way too simple to pay for and others are way too complex to risk doing yourself.

There is also the reverse of this when we are talking about software as a fundamental of computer speed. Some of the time your computer has software on it that needs to come off because it is the source of the loss in computer speed itself. This is where spyware removal software and anti virus software become valuble. You definately want to take a look at this kind of software& improve the ones you have on your computer. A high price does not mean high quality either.

Connection is the next thing that we want to talk about. Connecting to the internet is how most of us do much of our work with our computer. So if you have terrible connection speed or if your service is not fast or if the modem you are using in not good. So you immediately see that you can do a lot to speed up your computing by change and improving the things that connect you to the internet.

A satellite T-1 connection is about the fastest but I prefer cable because it is not affected by weather. Cable is awesome because it is very stable and I have been using it for year now and it out performs most alternatives. DSL on the phone lines is your next best choice if cable is not available. Just try to get the fastest service you can.

Connection speed is also dependant on the software that is used to connect to the internet service that you use. We have found that you can do software adjustments to Windows that optimize the browser and the email usage of the connection services. Doing these simple adjustments can improve a service dramatically. My cable connection operates at almost satellite speeds.

Do you know that the wrong type of storage can be harmful to the health of your business? Do you know what type of storage you need? Do you know how to choose the best storage at the right price?

Many people choose the wrong type of storage for their specific needs. The result can be slower access and operation of the system, it can be slower boot time, or it can affect your bottom line because it costs more than you actually need to spend.

As I work with servers and individual systems for our clients, I generally see one of three problems with storage choices companies (or individuals) have made:
• They have the wrong type of storage
• They don’t have enough storage
• They don’t have the proper redundancy in case of a failure

When choosing storage, you must first look at your server and consider how the new storage will be used. Will it be used primarily for programs/applications and email, or will it be used just for storage of images, documents and other files?

If you are using the new drive (storage) for applications, you need to choose a higher-cost, lower-capacity drive, such as a SCSI. This type of drive will run much faster and will be generally more reliable.

If you are using the new drive just for storage, you will want to get as much storage capacity as possible at the lowest cost. You might want to consider a SATA drive. This type of drive will run a bit slower and cost less than a SCSI drive. The new terabyte drives might be an option if you are purchasing a drive simply for large storage capacity. A graphic artist, for example, will need to store a large number of images and both templates and files containing images and other types of graphic files, which use a lot of space. If your business has moved to paperless operations, you will also need a large amount of storage to handle the image files that are replacing paper. An individual might need a huge amount of storage for photos, music files, e-books and movies. Opening or retrieving these files doesn’t need to be as fast as running a program or operating a company’s email accessibility.

Why do email and programs require a higher cost, lower capacity drive? You need to understand that email and applications must operate quickly. Email is actually like a database everyone in the company uses. It must be fast and reliable.

Finally, many individuals and businesses do not have the proper redundancy to protect them in the event of a failure of some sort. Redundancy is basically a backup of what is stored on the drive. I was slowed down when my computer crashed and I had no data, noaddress book and not even my passwords to get back online. Ididn't think I was doing anything remarkable by bouncing back toproductivity even with this handicap for a week. But from thefeedback I've had from more than a few people, it seemsparalysis would have been the acceptable common option.

Yes, I got slowed down, but nothing critical was lost and noappointments missed. Why? Internal reserves, resources anddrive. How do you survive in business today without yourcomputer (or maybe it's when your cell phone drops in the lakeor your Ipod gets lost)?

There were three parts to my personal survival. They are: A. Resourcefulness -- When things don't go your way, you canhave a pity party and choose to be paralyzed. Or you can decideto dig in to your reserves and available resources to propel youforward in spite of obstacles. I start with a simple question:What's the most important thing that needs to be done now andhow do I do it (options)?

It's a matter of choosing to get the work done and keeping yourpriorities in order, or using this problem (any problem) as anexcuse to procrastinate, or wallow in self-pity, or give up.

B. Intestinal Fortitude -- This was my father's term for thedrive, determination, guts, stamina and the like to find a wayor make a way when you hit a roadblock. Intestinal fortitudekeeps you going because the vision is clear, your passion isunquenchable and you are a winner - and winners never quit.

Of course when a glitch happens, what matters is how you handleit, not deny it. Handling a problem head on, gives you an actionplan. Action puts you in control. When you are in control, thefear and panic can't control you.

If a glitch with your computer is enough to put your wholebusiness at risk, maybe you need a dose of intestinal fortitudeto make some hard decisions to reduce that risk in the future,e.g. strategic investments in your infrastructure, etc. Look atthe cost of the investment compared to the direct cost oropportunity costs of a week offline (think salaries, sales,customer loyalty, customer satisfaction, product delays, andshipping delays).

C. Planning -- In this case, I was indeed lucky. The three daysafter the disk crash had already been blocked out to work on mythree-year vision and budget to get there and the detailed plansfor 2006. My schedule was already cleared of appointments,deadlines or correspondence.

As business owners, we all need some reflection time to lift oursights and take a longer view of where we are going, otherwise,it's possible to short-change yourself and the business.

The silver lining of my system crash was that without my owncomputer, I couldn't be tempted to procrastinate or avoid thesoul-searching and reflection this process requires. I was ableto really concentrate on what I want to do professionally andpersonally for the next 12-36 months.

Putting a timeline to the vision and goals accelerates thebusiness momentum and recharges my batteries for the next 90days to set it all in motion. Try it.

The word 'computer' originally implied a person, who, underinstructions from a mathematician, performed mechanicalcalculations. Mechanical calculating devices such as the abacuswere often put to use to aid this process.

At the end of the Middle Ages, mathematics and engineering inEurope received a considerable boost, thus leading to theinvention of numerous mechanical calculating devices. Thetechnology for clockwork was developed by the early 17thcentury. The period between the early 19th century and early20th century saw the development of a number of technologieswhich would be vital for the development of the digital computerlater on. Some examples are the punched card and the valve.Charles Babbage was the first person to design a fully programmablecomputer as early as 1837. However, he was unable toactually construct his computer due to a variety of reasons.

Analog computers were increasingly used in the first half of the20th century for a number of scientific computing needs.However, they became obsolete after the development of thedigital computer.

The first digital computer was the Atanasoff Berry Computer . Itused a binary system of arithmetic, parallel processing, aseparation of memory and computing functions and regenerativememory. Binary math and electronic circuits - both of which areused in today's computers - were first used in the AtanasoffBerry Computer.

In the 1930's and 1940's, newer and more efficient computerswere continuously developed. Gradually, they came to possess thekey features which are present in modern day computers - digitalelectronics and flexibility of programming.

Among the more important machines to be developed during thistime, the American ENIAC was prominent. It was a general purposemachine, but had an inflexible architecture. Later a farsuperior technique known as the stored program architecture wasdeveloped. It is the foundation from which all moderncomputers are derived.

Throughout the 1950's, computer design was primarily valvedriven. This was later replaced by transistor-driven design inthe 1960's. Transistor-based computers were smaller, faster andcheaper, and hence commercially viable. Integrated circuittechnology, adopted in the 1970's enabled computer productioncosts to hit a new low, so that even individuals could affordthem. That was the birth of the personal computer, as it isknown today.
